Steam and humidity sneak into the housing, mess with the wiring, and—pop—there goes another bulb. That’s why we’re moving toward high-waterproof grade infrared heaters. Instead of leaving the guts of the machine exposed, these units tuck the heating element behind a sealed, IP-rated barrier. It basically keeps the moisture out so the electronics can actually do their job. The magic of the heat Most heaters try to warm up the air in the room. But in a steamy shower, that just feels like fighting a losing battle. Infrared is different. It doesn’t care about the air; it goes straight for your skin and the surfaces around you. You feel that warmth the second you flip the switch. No waiting around shivering while the room slowly catches up. Plus, your bathroom fan doesn’t have to work nearly as hard. A few things to watch out for during install Here’s the catch: you can’t just rip out an old heater and plug one of these in. Infrared needs some real juice to get that instant heat, which means you’ll need a dedicated circuit. You’ve got to double-check your wire gauge. If the wiring is too thin, you’ll get a voltage drop, and the heater will feel lukewarm instead of cozy. Not exactly what you want on a freezing January morning. The trade-off Waterproofing isn’t free. It takes up space. Because of the heavy-duty gaskets and sealed casings, these units are a bit bulkier than those slim halogen strips. If you’re planning your ceiling cutouts, do it during the rough-in phase. Trying to squeeze one of these into a tight space later is a nightmare, and if the driver can’t breathe, it’ll overheat. One last tip: these things are built like tanks, but they aren’t immortal. Give the seals a quick look every few years. If a gasket cracks, that waterproof rating disappears, and you’re right back where you started.
